Why Science, Peace and Women’s Leadership Must Go Hand-in-Hand

Introduction: A New Face of Leadership

This November, as the world marks the International Week of Science and Peace (November 6–12, 2025), the Halima Abbey Foundation (HAF) reflects on a truth we’ve always stood by, that real peace is rooted in knowledge, care, and leadership that puts people and the planet first.

In Nigeria, where climate challenges grow daily, science and women’s leadership have become inseparable tools for building peace. Through the Green Queen Pageant Nigeria, we’re showing that beauty and brilliance can exist in the same space, and that women are not just voices in the room; they’re leading the movement toward sustainability.

Science: The Foundation of Peace

Science gives us understanding, the power to see how environmental issues, conflict, and community well-being connect. When droughts destroy farms or floods displace families in Lagos, the problem goes beyond the environment; it becomes a social and peace issue.

That’s why HAF’s environmental projects focus on education, awareness, and innovation. From plastic recycling projects in Nigeria to community tree planting in Lagos, we use science as a bridge between the environment and peace.

Science helps us answer questions like:

  • How can we protect women and children from climate-induced migration?
  • How can clean energy and waste management reduce community tension?
  • How can innovation empower local women to lead sustainable change?

Women: The Heart of Sustainable Change

Around the world, women are leading climate solutions, and in Nigeria, the story is no different. Yet their work often goes unseen.

Through the Green Queen Pageant Nigeria, HAF is rewriting that story. The pageant isn’t about crowns or catwalks; it’s about women climate leaders Nigeria who use their platforms to drive impact, from waste recycling initiatives to women-led climate projects in Lagos.

Every Green Queen finalist undergoes environmental leadership training for women, gaining the confidence, skills, and science-based knowledge to lead real projects within their communities.

These women are showing that leadership doesn’t have to be loud, it has to be lasting.

Peace: The Goal We Build Toward

Peace is not just the absence of conflict; it’s the presence of opportunity, equity, and hope.
At HAF, we believe peace grows when women are empowered to lead scientifically grounded community projects that address environmental and social challenges together.

Our approach aligns with SDG youth leadership in Nigeria, focusing on climate action, gender equality, and sustainable cities. By empowering women to design, manage, and lead environmental initiatives, we are building peaceful communities and nurturing the next generation of eco-leaders.

When a woman starts a community tree planting project in Lagos, she’s not just planting trees, she’s planting peace.

How HAF Brings It All Together

The Halima Abbey Foundation combines all three elements, science, peace, and women’s leadership, into practical programs and projects:

  • The Green Queen Pageant Nigeria – An eco pageant 2025 designed to celebrate women with innovative ideas for sustainability.
  • Youth Climate Action Programs Nigeria – Engaging young people to take leadership roles in their environment.
  • Plastic Recycling and Environmental Awareness Projects – Training women in Lagos and across Nigeria to turn waste into opportunity.

Each of these initiatives shows how education, environmental science, and female leadership can unite to build a more peaceful and sustainable Nigeria.

Conclusion: The Future Is Female and Green

As we celebrate this year’s International Week of Science and Peace, the message is clear, the future of peace depends on women who understand science, lead with empathy, and act with purpose.

At HAF, our mission is to keep creating opportunities for women to rise, lead, and transform communities through environmental awareness and scientific innovation.
Because when women lead, peace becomes possible, and when peace thrives, the planet heals.
