What is HAF’s core mission beyond the Green Queen initiative?
HAF exists to dismantle the false choice between gender equality and environmental survival. We pioneer feminist ecological models that position Nigerian women as architects of climate resilience – whether through pageantry, land rights advocacy, or indigenous knowledge preservation. The Green Queen is one expression of this philosophy.
How does HAF select its focus SDGs (4,5,13,15,17)?
These goals form an indivisible nexus:
SDG 4/5 educate and empower women
SDG 13/15 deploy their leadership for climate/land action
SDG 17 scales impact through partnerships
Unlike single-issue NGOs, we address root causes: the exclusion of women from ecological decision-making.
Can men support or participate in HAF?
Absolutely. While we center women’s leadership (to correct historical marginalization), 38% of our volunteers and 45% of donors are men. Key opportunities:
Pro-bono expertise in project implementation
Advocacy ambassadorship
Board advisory roles
True allyship means amplifying, not overshadowing, women’s environmental voices.
Where does HAF operate across Nigeria?
We prioritize ecosystem hotspots:
North: Sahel restoration (Sokoto, Kano, Borno)
South: Mangrove conservation (Rivers, Bayelsa, Akwa Ibom)
Urban centers: Climate literacy hubs (Lagos, Abuja, Port Harcourt)
Field presence in 12 states with virtual programs nationwide.
How is HAF funded? What percentage goes to programs?
Ethical funding mix: 60% foundations, 25% CSR partnerships, 15% individual giving
Financial governance: Audited by KPMG Nigeria
Impact allocation: 87% program spending (exceeds NGO standards)
Download our Annual Impact Report for full financial disclosure.
What distinguishes HAF from other environmental NGOs?
Our gender-climate integration framework:
| Traditional NGO Approach | HAF’s Model |
|---|---|
| Technical solutions | Women-led community solutions |
| Separate gender programs | Gender equity as operational infrastructure |
| Awareness campaigns | Cultural platforms (e.g., pageantry) as change vehicles |
How can academics/researchers collaborate?
We curate the Nigerian Women’s Ecological Knowledge Repository – Africa’s first oral history archive of female environmental stewardship. Opportunities:
Co-publish case studies on indigenous practices
Validate impact metrics for women-led conservation
Supervise field fellows
Email info@halimaabbeyfoundation.com with proposals.
Does HAF engage in policy advocacy?
Yes, through our Women’s Earth Charter Initiative:
Grassroots: Train women to document environmental violations via our GeoGuardian app
National: Draft position papers with NASS Gender Committee
Global: Advocate at COP/UNEA through our UNDP partnership
Current focus: Land ownership reform for female conservationists.
What safeguards ensure ethical operations?
Gender violence prevention: Verified by GBV Accountability Lab
Environmental ethics: Projects undergo IUCN-style impact screening
Child protection: Level 3 certification by Safe Network Nigeria
Whistleblower reports: integrity@halimafoundation.com (encrypted)
How does the Green Queen align with HAF’s broader mission?
The pageant is a strategic culture hack:
Symbolic: Reclaims “beauty” as ecological harmony
Practical: Winners become SDG ambassadors for 2 years
Systemic: 30% sponsorship fees fund non-pageant initiatives
It’s one portal into our ecosystem – not the totality of our work.
