COP30 and the Call Why Women Must Be at the Centre

As the global community anticipates COP30 in Brazil’s Amazon region, a powerful message reverberates throughout Africa: this is the time for decisive action not mere commitments. The words of Nigeria’s Vice President, Senator Kashim Shettima, encapsulate a sentiment shared by numerous climate advocates: “Let COP30 be remembered as the moment the world transitioned from pledges to tangible performance, from ambition to decisive action, and from dialogue to actual delivery.”

At the Halima Abbey Foundation (HAF), we wholeheartedly embrace this imperative.

Every day in Africa, women confront the harsh realities of climate change. They travel greater distances for water, adapt their agriculture to erratic weather patterns, safeguard their families during flooding events, and reconstruct their communities post-disasters. Nevertheless, these same women who are resilient, powerful, and solution-oriented are often the most marginalized in discussions surrounding climate initiatives.

COP30 stands as a pivotal chance to rectify this situation.

To transform dialogue into real outcomes, Africa must prioritize women in the formulation of climate solutions. They should not merely be seen as beneficiaries but as decision-makers, innovators, and leaders who grasp both the urgency and the human implications of this crisis.

The Green Queen Initiative is a direct response to this global appeal.

We are empowering young African women with the essential knowledge, visibility, and leadership skills necessary to influence climate policy, develop solutions, and advocate for community resilience.

Meaningful climate action must begin with those who are most affected women are undeniably at the forefront.

As the world turns its attention to Brazil, our aspirations are straightforward:

Let COP30 mark the moment the world truly hears listens to women.
Let this signify the shift from promises to meaningful progress.
Let African women be the leaders in this transformation.
