“The Girl I Am, The Change I Lead: Girls on the Frontline of Crisis”
Local theme: “Reduce, Reuse, Recycle – The Girl Child Way”
On Saturday, 11 October 2025, the Halima Abbey Foundation joined forces with the Sapphire Nigeria Women’s Football Supporters Club in Surulere, Lagos, for a landmark event marking the International Day of the Girl Child. It was a day charged with energy, hope and demonstrated change. Halima Abbey Foundation
From Inspiration into Climate Action
The event centred on the intersection of female empowerment and environmental stewardship. With workshops and sporting sessions, young girls didn’t just learn—they acted. They transformed everyday waste into creative artworks and functional items, living the “Reduce, Reuse, Recycle – The Girl Child Way” mantra in real time.
On the football field, the youth engaged in clinics led by the passionate team from the Sapphire Nigeria Women’s Football Supporters Club, where the lessons extended beyond sport: teamwork, confidence and the mindset of a changemaker.
Elevating the Climate SDG Through Girls’ Creativity
At the heart of the day’s success was a clear message: this is about more than immediate reward, it’s about long-term investment in the girls’ capacity to drive sustainability. The Foundation honoured outstanding involvement and innovation through a dedicated climate-action empowerment programme.
Rather than simply awarding cash, the Foundation supported the young changemakers by recognising their eco-creative leadership, helping them turn ideas into tangible contributions aligned with the climate-related Sustainable Development Goals.
These efforts included:
- Recognising initiative, creativity and leadership in applying environmental action.
- Investing in the girls’ futures supporting materials, personal development, or seed support for their eco-friendly micro-projects.
- Sending the clear message that their work matters: they are visible, valued, and a force of change in their communities.
And so, the joy and pride on the girls’ faces confirmed the real impact: this was empowerment in action, not just celebration.
Gratitude and Vision for the Future
The Halima Abbey Foundation extends heartfelt thanks to the Sapphire Nigeria Women’s Football Supporters Club, the volunteers, parents and community leaders whose commitment made the event possible.
The success of this day amplifies our determination: we will continue creating platforms that empower the girl child in Nigeria. Our support won’t stop with this event it will grow into mentorship, ongoing engagement and long-term pathways for climate-action leadership.
